Changing lives through basic IT training for underprivileged female youths

The Zambia Association for Research and Development (ZARD) opened its Women's  Information Technology (I.T) Literacy Training Centre on July 17 2006. The centre is aimed at increasing ICT awareness as well as empower disadvantaged women and girls with the basics of applications such as Windows xp, Microsoft Word, as well as how to use the Internet and email.
By creating a non-intimidating training atmosphere for the women and girls, ZARD hopes to encourage more women and girls from low income communities to become involved with information technology, realise the benefits of information technology such as accessing new knowledge and education, study and job opportunities, establishing new business contacts, communication and also network for improved livelihood.

As information technology spreads into every aspect of life, those who have access to I.T and knowledge have more sources of information and ways to gain support. Information Technology somehow holds a unique promise for women in developing countries to empower them to move beyond their traditionally assigned roles, and to help them to take their rightful place in society by active participation in all areas.

Betty Zulu, one of the beneficiaries of the Women’s I.T Literacy Programme demonstrated commitment and will be a profound inspiration to young girls, young mothers and society. Betty Zulu is a 29 year old widow and a mother of three children. She has two daughters aged 12 & 10 and a son aged 5.
