Winners And Losers In The Privatisation Of Zambia’s Copper Mines.
This is a recently completed copper mining industry study titled ‘For whom the windfalls? winners and losers in the privatization of Zambia’s copper mines.' By Alastair Fraser and John Lungu, with support form CSTNZ, CCJDP and funded by Christian Aid.
The report’s outline is as follows:
Executive summary which highlights the 6 problems with the privatization of Zambia’s copper mines namely:
• One sided deals
• Inadequate regulation, illegal operations and impunity
• Casualisation of the workforce
• Deepening Pensioner poverty
• Lack of linkages to local business
• Failure to protect the social infrastructure
The other chapters include a history of the role of copper mining in Zambia’s development, the Privatisation process, the successes of privatization, the impact of privatization on the mineworkers, the Copperbelt communities, and on the Zambian economy. The report also attempts to answer some questions in the following chapters titled The Chambeshi mine/NFC – are the Chinese the worst investors, Can renegotiating the development agreements bring in funds for development and overcome aid dependence and finally some policy recommendations.
